Ganesh Chaturthi 2023: History

1. Although Ganesh Chaturthi is traditionally celebrated in most states of India, the fervor with which it is celebrated in the state of Maharashtra is unmatched.

2. Interestingly, it was not a major part of the Maharashtra tradition until it appeared here during the Maratha dynasty. In fact, Ganesh Chaturthi was originally a family affair.

3.  It was Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856–1920), an acknowledged leader of the Indian Independence Movement

4. who was credited with making Lord Ganesh a strong symbol of unity and culture among the people of Maharashtra in an attempt to resist British rule.

5. Although the British regime strongly suppressed political uprisings and protests, it did not interfere with religious ceremonies.

6. Therefore, the Vinayaka Chavithi festival provided a space to show national unity.

7. In 1893, Tilak reinvented Ganesh Chaturthi, transforming it from an annual family celebration into a public event in its own right.
