IOS 17 beta: Public vs developer beta
In the past, joining Apple’s Developer Program, which costs $99 per year, was necessary to gain access to the developer betas. However, in 2023, Apple modified this requirement to include free developer accounts, which had previously only provided access to the Developer forums and Xcode. This implies you never again should be a paid individual from Apple’s engineer program to get the designer beta. You only need to register as a developer before you can test the developer beta.
The temptation to install would have been strong given that the developer beta was effectively open to everyone from the day of the WWDC keynote. However, our recommendation at the time—and still is—is to use the IOS 17 Public Beta, which was released on July 12.
Betas for developers are not intended for non-developers. They are not so steady as the public beta.
Even running the public beta carries some risks. The user interface may change, features may be added and then removed, and third-party app compatibility is not guaranteed. As a result, we recommend that you do not install a beta on your primary iPhone; instead, use a spare device to test out the new features. To return to IOS 16 read this: How to get rid of an IOS beta on an iPhone. We recommend that you do not install the beta on your sole iPhone; instead, use a spare! You will need a backup from before installing the beta.
IOS 17: How to install the beta and full version
IOS 17 will be easy to install once the final version is released. Go to General > Software Update in the iPhone’s Settings app; IOS will check for any suitable updates and guide you through the most common way of introducing them. You only need to follow the steps we provide in our IOS updating guide. It’s simpler still on the off chance that you’ve turned on Programmed Updates, which you can do from a similar screen.
However, betas can also be installed prior to and throughout the year following the release of IOS 17. Developer betas are the first to arrive, while public betas typically arrive a day or two later.
Getting the developer beta installed: It should come as no surprise that in order to install a developer beta, you must be a registered Apple software developer. There are free and paid ($99/£79) versions of the beta. To ensure that everyone has access to the IOS 16 beta as soon as possible, Apple has made the beta available to all registered developers since June 2023. Follow these steps to sign up for an account and install the developer beta:
- Download the Apple Developer App from the App Store.
- Open the app and click on Account.
- Tap on Sign In and sign in using your usual Apple ID.
The beta should appear under General > Software Update > Beta Updates once you are logged in. For this to work, IOS 16.5 or later is required. In our How to Get the IOS 17 Beta article, we go over this procedure in greater detail.
To avoid too many complications, we recommend installing the public beta rather than the developer beta.
How to set up the public beta: A superior choice for generally is go for the public beta all things considered. While the developer betas are released earlier, public beta updates are still free and provide you with bragging rights with your friends. In IOS 16.4, Apple has changed how betas are installed. They are now linked to Apple IDs rather than profiles, so joining the beta program on any device with an Apple ID is all that is required.
In either case, it’s critical to emphasize that beta versions of software aren’t finished and are likely to have bugs. That’s kind of why they’re being tested. Therefore, we do not recommend installing a beta on your primary device and you should be prepared for things to go wrong, possibly catastrophically. Follow the steps in our IOS beta installation guide if that doesn’t put you off. Read more about how to join the program here: how to become a member of Apple’s beta program and test new software.
